World No Tobacco Day 2013

A comprehensive ban of all tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship is required under the WHO Framework Convention for Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) for all Parties to this treaty within five years of the entry into force of the Convention for that Party. Evidence shows that comprehensive advertising bans lead to reductions in the numbers of people starting and continuing smoking. Statistics show that banning tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce tobacco demand and thus a tobacco control “best buy”. WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control

Every year, on 31 May, WHO and partners everywhere mark World No Tobacco Day. This year the theme is: “ban tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship”. Among other objectives, the campaign aims to encourage Parties to implement Article 13 of the WHO FCTC and the guidelines for its implementation. While Article 13 is among those in which the most progress has been made by Parties in recent years, challenges remain for many in introducing a comprehensive ban. In this context, action to accelerate implementation of Article 13 is still required.

World Health Statistics 2013 contains WHO’s annual compilation of health-related data for its 194 Member States, and includes a summary of the progress made towards achieving the health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and associated targets. This year, it also includes highlight summaries on the topics of reducing the gaps between the world’s most-advantaged and least-advantaged countries, and on current trends in official development assistance (ODA) for health.

Experiences in expanding national reproductive health programmes

Countries and areas of the WHO Western Pacific Region have made significant efforts to improve access to reproductive health in the last few decades. During the consultative meeting for the finalization of the Regional Framework for Reproductive Health in the Western Pacific Region, participants from the ministries of health requested that the document be accompanied by accounts of experiences in expanding and strengthening national reproductive health programmes from selected countries. This suggestion was followed up and five countries, Cambodia, China, Malaysia, Vanuatu and Viet Nam, submitted their contributions...
